Brilliant Cut Diamonds For Beautiful Rings

Brilliant cut diamonds are one of the three categories of diamond cuts classified by the Gemological Institute of America (GIA) This classification is made based on the facet styles and arrangements in a diamond. The other two categories are step cuts and mixed cuts.

Brilliant cut diamonds are characterized by presence of many facets with shapes of triangles and kites. Spreading outwards towards the outer rim like a cone, the facets are aligned in a way that allows maximized reflection of light from the top of the diamond adding brilliance to it.

Brilliant cut diamonds are divided into further popular categories like round brilliant cut and princess cut. Round brilliant cut diamond is the most widely chosen with number of facets as many as fifty eight (fifty seven excluding the culet) while such numbers in classic brilliant cut diamonds are fewer. It is a preferred cut with diamond crystals that are octahedral. Princess cut is preferred for diamond crystals of odd shapes and gives the gemstone a square appearance.

The half above the girdle of the diamond which is the top half is called the crown. The half below the girdle is the lower half and is called the pavilion. Out of the 58 facets of a round brilliant cut diamond, the crown and the pavilion have 33 and 25 facets on them. However the girdle facets on the modern day round brilliant cut diamonds are not reckoned with the total number of facets. While 58 is the standardized number of facets on a round brilliant cut diamond, there is no one standard for the proportions in which the facets are arranged like the depth of the pavilion or the angle and height of the crown.

Facets on brilliant cut diamonds play the most significant role in controlling the path of travel of the light which in turn determines the splendour with which the diamond would sparkle. Within the three-dimensional diamond, light gets reflected repeatedly as it enters and comes out from various angles and directions regardless of the symmetry of brilliant cut diamonds. Also in brilliant cut diamonds, the intensity of brilliance depends on the relations between the crown angle and the pavilion angle. Usually to give the gemstone a better look, the shallowness of the crown angle is complemented with making the pavilion angle steep as also the reverse. The girdle thickness and table ratio are other aspects for consideration.
