Diamond Cuts For Rings
It is the perfect diamond
cut that gives a diamond its beauty, longevity and value treasured so
much by mankind. Man has been cutting diamond to enhance its beauty
for about 800 years. It was because man realized even during this early
period that diamond cut adds brilliance to the diamond making it more
attractive.
The following cut diamond rings for sale are currently listed on eBay.
Table cut was the first facet to have been given to a diamond
crystal and this method is still used. The facet patterns gradually
started to be more complex with the subsequent developments in diamond
cut over centuries like rose cut, old single and mine cut, old European
cut, English Round Cut and the round brilliant cut used in modern times.
It needs to be emphasized that it is ultimately the diamond cut that
gives the diamond its cutting edge. There are standard grades of diamond
cut published by the American Gem Society (AGS) and Gemological Institute
of America (GIA) and having the right information from these standards
is essential before choosing a diamond.
The color and clarity
of a diamond are just not enough to give it the radiance and sparkle
that this gemstone is famous for. The more ideal the diamond cut, the
better is the display of the brilliance in diamonds. Diamond has to
be cut to shape but the diamond cut and diamond shape is not one and
the same. The facets on a diamond done with a diamond cut enrich the
stone with the required proportions of depth, width and uniformity which
in turn give the diamond its sparkle and brilliance by making it more
light reflecting. In fact the white light that a diamond reflects to
our eyes for creating the effect of brilliance is largely derived from
the proportions of width and depth of the facets made by the diamond
cut. If the diamond cut is shallow, not enough light is reflected from
the stone thereby making it appear dull and lifeless. Too deep a diamond
cut creates similar distortions.
A diamond cut is not
only to ensure the width and depth of the stone. It also gives the diamond
the much needed symmetry of the facets. The diamond can sparkle in full
glory if the surface is cut flat and polished perfectly. If the facets
of the diamond are not properly aligned, the symmetry cannot be achieved
and the diamond becomes less reflective of light. The more the light
can get reflected in the facets of the diamond, the more is the display
of the effect of scintillation. Diamonds with facets not aligned adequately
are graded as Fair and Poor.
There are quite a few
problems associated with diamond cut adversely impacting the diamond’s
quality that a buyer must ensure to guard against. The culet may not
be right on the center or even not there. Even if there, the culet may
be found to be chipped or broken. Facets may be too many or not properly
aligned or the girdle as thick as to cause disproportion.
